Tsuruya (鶴屋, Tsuruya?) (given name unknown) is a character in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She first appears in the episode "Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00," though her first actual appearance is episode four: "The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi." She is voiced by Yuki Matsuoka in the Japanese release, and by Kari Wahlgren in the English dub.

Tsuruya is a second-year student and a close friend of Mikuru's. Recognisable by her long, green hair, extended left canine and "odd way of speaking" (according to megas-normal Kyon), Tsuruya is a relaxed, happy yet very aware schoolgirl who is generous and caring to those around her. Despite this, she can get carried away with surrounding events, and has been known for taking things too far.

She is most famous for her fits of chronic laughter that will burst up at any appropiate (and sometimes inappropiate) moment whenever she finds something even mildly amusing.

She appears to be best friends with Mikuru, and is very caring of her friend. However, she is more than willing to tease her at a moment's notice.

Although not an official member of the SOS Brigade, she is one of the three non-members that occasionally participate in SOS-dan activities, alongside Taniguchi and Kunikida. However, she takes a more active role than them in most cases. At one point, Kyon even suggests that she be allowed be become a full-fledged member of the SOS-dan, as Tsuruya has picked up on hints that Asahina, Nagato, and Haruhi are not "normal."

In the light novels, it is strongly implied that Tsuruya's wealthy and venerable family is a covert supporter of "the Agency" to which Itsuki Koizumi belongs. Tsuruya herself seems to possess some knowledge of the secrets of the SOS Brigade and other matters, although she never explicitly says so. Tsuruya temporarily takes care of Mikuru Asahina during an event when the latter has a double presence in the 'present' of the SOS Brigade and is also the caretaker of a mysterious artifact discovered on her family's grounds, both at Kyon's request.

  • Due to her tendency to engage in manic fits of laughter, Tsuruya is also known as LOL-tan by her fans on the Internet. She is also known as FANG-tan, for the single tooth that shows when she opens her mouth, or LOL FANG-tan, a combination of the two.
  • Just before Tsuruya's first appearance, Mikuru pointed out that she was not a time traveller and just a friend she met at school. Despite this...
  • Tsuruya's first name has yet to be given.
  • It's possible that Tsuruya suffers from Chronic Laughing Syndrome.
  • According to the novels, the Tsuruya Family supports Koizumi Itsuki's organization.
