[edit] Overview

As Haruhi begins to lose spirit when nothing new has happened lately, Kyon encounters more new things than he would have ever bargained for. It all begins with a simple, yet mysterious note left in Kyon's shoe locker.

[edit] Episode details

Kyon arrives at school in the morning to find Haruhi with her head down on her desk. Ryouko is there making sure she is okay. When Ryouko sees Kyon, she tells him to take care of her.

Kyon asks why Haruhi was absent yesterday after school, as the SOS Brigade was supposed to do a review of their activities. She shushes him, noting that she had already done the review by herself. Idly, she complains about the hot weather and wishes for the day when the school changes from winter to summer uniforms.

Concerned about Haruhi's well being, Kyon brings up a conversation from yesterday suggesting that she could stop looking for mysterious happenings that never come and, instead, have fun and "find a nice guy" like a normal high school student. Haruhi scoffs at the suggestions, describing love as a kind of "mental illness." She admits, though, that she does periodically have such physical urges, but she knows better than to get too attached and make a mistake in that area.

Additionally, if Haruhi began pursuing that lifestyle, she claims that there would be no time left for the SOS Brigade. Kyon suggests that she change the club to one that simply has fun, as that would attract more people. Haruhi disagrees, stating that she created the club just because clubs like those are ultimately no fun.

With a sigh, Haruhi wonders aloud if some sort of big trouble will happen soon.

Ryouko suddenly appears next to Haruhi and Kyon, surprising the latter. Ryouko scolds Haruhi for making such a dangerous comment, but she does agree that a new happening would make everyday life more interesting.

Haruhi does not respond. Kyon comments to himself that this is the first time he has witnessed her acting so defeated. Nevertheless, he finds this face cute on her.

Ryouko whispers to Kyon that perhaps Haruhi is lovesick, but Kyon disagrees. He then narrates that although Haruhi is unlikely to fall in love anytime soon in this world, the "big trouble" that Haruhi is hoping for has already been developing in the background.

[edit] Trivia

Edit this trivia
  • This is episode 4, chronologically.
  • The "Ultra" of "Ultra director Haruhi Suzumiya" in the opening credit is written with small font.
  • At this episode (at 2:41), you can see the ET NekoMan at background of sponsorship. On the Nekoman's forehead, 'ET' is written, but blurred.
  • During the battle, Ryōko asks Yuki, "You love Kyon-kun, don't you? I know you have realized it," in sped up and reversed "incantation" Japanese. What Ryōko says.
  • In the series, Yuki was moving soundlessly, stepping without any squeak. In 11:19, Yuki made her first soundful step, during the battle.
  • During the preview, Haruhi and Kyon shout "Suzumiya Haruhi, Ready GO!" This is reference to the anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
  • Also in the preview, when Kyon interrupts Haruhi giving the chronological number of the next episode to give the number of it in airing order, he does so by saying "Igiari" (Objection). This is likely a reference to the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS (known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban), similar to the references made in episode 8.
  • The opening theme isn't aired in this episode. The full credits are instead shown in the preface before the cut theme song.
  • A possible oversight in the animation, when Kyon returns the computer monitor to Haruhi's desk (about 04:15), Haruhi seems to pass through the unseen monitor cables.
  • A couple from 1:13 seems to break up in 15:41
