Kyon discusses his never believing in Santa Claus, as he has always suspected the old man wearing the red costume who only works on Christmas Eve to be a fraud. Ever since he graduated from junior high, Kyon has ceased believing in aliens, time travelers, people with supernatural powers, and evil organizations. It is revealed, however, that Kyon still deeply wants these fantasies to exist.
In class, all the students are asked to stand and say a few things about themselves. The scene opens at the end of Kyon's introduction and the start of Suzumiya Haruhi's. Haruhi stands and declares that she has no interest in normal humans; however, if there is anyone possesses ESP, comes from the future, or is an alien, or a slider, she wants them to join her. The entire class stares at Haruhi afterwards, unsure whether or not to laugh.
After that, Kyon decides to ask Haruhi a few questions about her introduction. In response, she asks if Kyon is an alien. After finding out that Kyon is just a normal human, she stops speaking to him, explaining that she does not have time to waste on normal humans.
At lunch, Kyon sits with Taniguchi, who tells Kyon to give up on Haruhi if he was after a relationship. According to Taniguchi, Haruhi has always been a "weirdo." Even in junior high, she pulled lots of pranks, which include her drawing a large image onto the school playground. Haruhi has never turned a guy down, but none of them lasted over two weeks (the shortest was five minutes). Despite all this, Kyon admits Haruhi still has the looks.
During P.E. class, Taniguchi tells Kyon about his research on all the girls in the current class, where he has given each girl a specific grade. Asakura Ryōko is among the top three on Taniguchi's list, graded A**. With all the things Taniguchi said, Kyon is curious why Haruhi is acting the way she is. He notices three things about Haruhi: her hairstyle changes everyday (which makes Kyon wonder about her Sunday hairstyle, when there is no school), she shamelessly changes clothes in front of the boys as if they were "potatoes," (in at least one instance, this causes Ryōko to herd the boys out of the classroom), and she never seems to stay in a club for very long (she attends to one meeting and then leaves).
On one Wednesday, Kyon decides to ask Haruhi about her daily change of hairstyle. This, for some reason, triggers something for Haruhi to start speaking. She explains that the change in hairstyle each day is because each day gives off a different color. Monday (moon) is yellow. Tuesday (fire) is red. Wednesday (water) is blue. Thursday (wood) is green. Friday (gold) is gold. Saturday (earth) is light brown. Sunday (sun) is white.
After the explanation Kyon tells Haruhi his opinion involving numbers. He says Mondays feels like a one, while Tuesdays two, and so on. Once again, Haruhi coldly responds, "No one asked for your opinion!" Silence falls between them as they continue staring at each other. The moment becomes almost awkward, but Haruhi suddenly breaks the silence, asking Kyon if they have ever met in the past. Kyon answers no.
The next day, when Kyon enters the classroom, he notices that Haruhi has cut her hair. He wonders if it was because he pointed out the patterns of her hairstyle the day before. Since then, Kyon and Haruhi have been having small conversations every day before the start of class. The conversations gradually become more personal, and Kyon soon asks why Haruhi dumps all those guys after such a short time. She answers that all of them were too ordinary and that she is looking for something special, asserting that even gender would not matter!
Taniguchi notices these daily conversations and asks Kyon what sort of magic he used to get Haruhi to speak, but Kyon only thinks his reply. Ryōko soon joins the conversation, also wanting to know what Kyon has done. Without getting an answer, she says that at least it is a good thing for Haruhi to have someone to talk to.
When it came time for students to draw new assigned seats, Kyon believed that this was his chance to get away from Haruhi. Unfortunately, it does not turn out the way he wants, as Haruhi again draws the seat behind Kyon. With this, the length of their conversations grows, also with Haruhi's complaints about there being no "interesting" club. Kyon explains about how humans create what they want (planes were invented because some people wanted to fly and had the passion to pursue it), and this advice inspires Haruhi beyond what Kyon could have imagined.
In a later class, Kyon is about to fall asleep, but Haruhi grabs his collar and pulls, smashing the back of his neck onto her desk. Kyon angrily gets out of his seat and demands and explanation, but Haruhi was just trying to get his attention. She tells him that she finally figured it out: she will create a club! She asks Kyon for help, but he points out that class is still going on. Haruhi then notices the class and instructor staring at her, and she sits down. As soon as class ends, Haruhi hauls Kyon into the hallway to a staircase and demands his assistance in making a new club. Kyon refuses, but Haruhi just ignores him and says, "I will go and secure a club room," and leaves.
After school the next day, Haruhi once again hauls Kyon into the hallway but this time stops outside another classroom. She enters the room, where a girl is seen reading a book near the window. The girl is Nagato Yuki. Haruhi explains how she is the only member of the literary club and, thus, allows Haruhi to use the room.
The following day after school, Haruhi instructs Kyon to go to their clubroom while she runs another errand. Arriving at the club room, Kyon sees Yuki in the same position as he saw her yesterday--reading a book by the window. Kyon tries to start a conversation to break the silence, but it does not last long, as Yuki's responses are all brief. Haruhi then bursts through the door with another student, Asahina Mikuru. With fear in her eyes, Mikuru complains as Haruhi locks the doors to the club room. Kyon curiously asks Haruhi where she "abducted" Mikuru from and why. Haruhi answers simply that it was a "voluntary arrest"; apparently Mikuru was by herself and doing nothing at lunchtime. The real reason, however, is because Mikuru has the "turn on" factor (Moé), which is very important. However, Haruhi is not yet finished with her point, as she then grabs Mikuru's breasts, exclaiming how big they are in comparison to hers. Kyon finally steps in and pulls Haruhi away.
Haruhi then asks what other club Mikuru is in and demands her to quit. Mikuru looks at Yuki and says, "I understand; I will quit the calligraphy club and join this one," thinking that Haruhi wanted her to join the literary club instead. Kyon explains, though, that they are just borrowing this room for another club. And here Haruhi finally announces that she has decided upon a name for the new club.
She names the club SOS Brigade, which stands for "Save the World by Overloading it with Fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade." Kyon, as usual, feebly protests the name, pointing out that it should be an association instead. But since the club does not have enough initial members, the term "brigade" is used instead.
Kyon, unable to argue any further, dejectedly sighs.

[edit] Trivia
|
- This is episode 1, chronologically.
- The episode symbolically begins in grayscale and turns to full color at the moment of Kyon's first encounter with Haruhi.
- Kyon begins his narration for this episode by declaring that he realized early on in life that Santa Claus did not exist. These lines echo closely the opening narration of the Itsudatte My Santa! OVA. Haruhi's seiyuu, Aya Hirano, played Santa Mai in this series.
- The book that Yuki is reading is The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons.
- Haruhi holds up issues of Comptiq (with Shuffle! on the cover) and Comp Ace (with cover illustration by Navel, the original makers of Shuffle!) to illustrate the necessity of moé in the SOS Brigade. Yuko Goto (Mikuru), Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon) and Sayaka Aoki (Kyon's sister) were the seiyuu of Kaede, Rin, and Lisianthus from Shuffle!.
- In class, at approx. 9:49, Haruhi asks Kyon if she has seen him before. This is a reference about the non-animated chapter "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody."
