- This is actually episode 11, chronologically.
- The black bands on either side of the screen show that the film was recorded using a camcorder in 4:3 standard aspect ratio (all episodes are produced in 16:9 aspect ratio).
- In the sequence where Mikuru is running past the shops in her bunny outfit, the pay envelope she was carrying in between her breasts vanishes until the last part, where she gets too tired to run fast.
- The strange conversation between Nagato and Koizumi over "the key" is a reference to Kyon and his role in the overall story and relation with Haruhi. As noted by Yuki then Mikuru and Itsuki, Kyon was told that he has been "chosen by Haruhi." They all showed significant interest and curiosity in him.
- In the introduction and end credits to the film, Mikuru's, Yuki's, and Itsuki's names are written in katakana instead of kanji and hiragana to imply that they all play other people than themselves, even though their characters have the same names.
- Yuki does the announcement for "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi I" on next episode preview on the DVD. Yuki DVD Preview
- The limited edition DVD version contains an extra scene. [This link has been taken down from Youtube]
- The jacket of the limited edition DVD features Mikuru wearing a frog suit which is a reference to Episode 9, "Someday in the Rain."
- The episode director Yamamoto Hiroshi produced many independent live-action films when he was in Kyoto University Animation Lovers' Society. One of them is Tokusatsu movie Grudge Squadron Ressenti–man (怨念戦隊ルサンチマン, Onnen Sentai Ressentiment?), and apparently many of the "poor camera techniques" seen in "Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00" are inspired from this movie.
- Whenever Mikuru appears in the (revealing) bunny costume, there appears a small dot on her left breast. This is explained in the 10th episode.
- If one looks carefully at Mikuru in the "kiss" scene, one can see that her cheeks are unusually red. This is an allusion to the fact, unmentioned in the anime, that Tsuruya had spiked her drink with alcohol.
- The unanimated "The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya" episode tells the behind-the-scenes story of "Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00" and many supernatural phenomena that occurred during the shooting. Some of them were filmed and can be seen in the anime.
- A flock of gray doves turned into white doves in one night.
- The lead actress radiated a photon laser from her blue-colored contact lens. (filmed)
- The lead actress generated a hyper-vibratile monomolecular cutter from her silver-colored contact lens.
- The lead actress shot a rifle dart from her gold-colored contact lens.
- The lead actress created a micro black hole from her green-colored contact lens.
- (The abnormal phenomena related to the lead actress were fixed by Nagato's nanomachines.)
- Riverside cherry trees reached full bloom unseasonably. (filmed)
- Kyon's sister's cat talked. (filmed)
- BB guns changed into water guns without anyone noticing.
- The white doves turned into extinct passenger pigeons.
- The precession movement of the Earth tilted slightly.
- A CGI opening movie and professional quality VFX were added while the production staff (Kyon and Haruhi) was asleep. (filmed)
- Mysterious groups of people were wandering around the school in cosplay.
- Kyon thought of a plan to stop those increasing preposterous phenomena. The plan, letting Haruhi record the closing disclaimer two times, can be seen in the film too.
- Though the events taken place in this first episode remain confusing and distorted, the majority of them are ultimately realistic. There are two exceptions. The first is Shamisen, the talking cat. Though his presence is never explained in the anime (it is in the original serial novels), it is easy to have forgotten his presence and ability to speak in the light of everything else that was going on. The second is during Mikuru and Yuki's first fight when Mikuru uses the Mikuru Beam. Though apparently meant to be nothing more than a special effect, it is clear that something unexpected happens. The camera shakes and blacks out for a moment, Kyon grunts at the impact, and Nagato uncharacteristically attacks Mikuru. Though not explained, it is believed that Mikuru did somehow use a real Mikuru Beam as a result of Haruhi's desire to have her do so.
- In the first battle of Mikuru and Yuki, Mikuru is using a Desert Eagle 10" barrel version Modelgun.
- Bandai's Perfect Grade Gundam model kits box: PG XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero Custom's box and PG GAT-X105 Strike Gundam's box can be seen at the Yamatsuchi Model Shop's commercial during 15:17, right after Mikuru bows down.
- The model gun that Mikuru taking fire at model shop CM is an AK-47.
- The entire episode bears striking similarity to the existential nihilism of Macbeth when he states that:
"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."
- This is episode 1, chronologically.
- The episode symbolically begins in grayscale and turns to full color at the moment of Kyon's first encounter with Haruhi.
- Kyon begins his narration for this episode by declaring that he realized early on in life that Santa Claus did not exist. These lines echo closely the opening narration of the Itsudatte My Santa! OVA. Haruhi's seiyuu, Aya Hirano, played Santa Mai in this series.
- The book that Yuki is reading is The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons.
- Haruhi holds up issues of Comptiq (with Shuffle! on the cover) and Comp Ace (with cover illustration by Navel, the original makers of Shuffle!) to illustrate the necessity of moé in the SOS Brigade. Yuko Goto (Mikuru), Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon) and Sayaka Aoki (Kyon's sister) were the seiyuu of Kaede, Rin, and Lisianthus from Shuffle!.
- In class, at approx. 9:49, Haruhi asks Kyon if she has seen him before. This is a reference about the non-animated chapter "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody."
- There is a boy with short, blond hair in class 1-5 that seems to be getting away with a lot of sleeping throughout the episode.
- This is episode 2, chronologically.
- Kyon refers to a Sisyphean task at the opening.
- The black door on the left of the room is a reference to the unanimated "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" episode.
- At the end of the preview for Episode 4, Kyon asks, "Father, will I do it?" This is a parody of the line "Father, I will do it!" from a baseball manga Kyojin no Hoshi.
- Nagato is reading the Japanese translation of The Code Book: The Evolution of Secrecy from Mary, Queen of Scots to Quantum Cryptography by Simon Singh, published by Anchor. The Japanese translation was published by Shinchōsha (ISBN 4-10-539302-2).
- The book that Nagato lends Kyon is Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It's the first book of the Hyperion Cantos tetrology (which continues with The Fall of Hyperion which she was reading in the previous episode).
- The camera that Haruhi using for menacing Computer Society's President is FujiFilm DATE1000. It's a one-time-use camera.
- In the anime episode, Haruhi's response to the Computer Society members' being witnesses to the president's extortion is censored. In the light novel, it is revealed that Haruhi threatened to claim that the Computer Society members attempted to gang rape Mikuru.
- This is episode 7, chronologically.
- In the prologue, just before the opening, a red book titled "Master of Space" can be seen in the bookshelf close to Yuki. This is likely a reference to "Master of Space and Time" by Rudy Rucker (ISBN 0312942974), since the theme of the book fits well with this episode where Yuki's powers are showcased extensively.
- The gym uniform for first-year students is blue, while red for second-year students and green for senior students.
- Koizumi's cell phone is a Nokia 6630 Bordeaux Rouge.
- This episode took place after the events of episode fourteen, and various references to it are scattered throughout. These include:
- Mikuru's nurse outfit, Kyon's "I happen to be involved in a world-cramping incident," and Mikuru's "If you're nice to me, it'll happen again..." are also references to Episode 14.
- At 13:22 when Haruhi and Mikuru change into cheerleaders, Haruhi thinks about giving Mikuru a ponytail, then looks at Kyon and decides not to. This is a reference to Episode 14 "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI."
- At 15:39 a blue giant is standing behind a Ferris wheel. It is the same blue giant as in episode 13 (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya V). The Ferris wheel can be seen at 17:19-24, 17:29-49, 18:20-26 and at 18:27 in Episode 13.
- From 17:05 to 17:12, Koizumi states, "During the previous incident, when you and Suzumiya-san were in the other world... how did you make it back?" This line is a reference to Episode 14, "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi VI".
- When Haruhi signals for Mikuru to attempt (what Itsuki assumes is) a squeeze, Kyon asks "are you trying to lower the pitcher's MP?" This is a reference to the Dragon Quest series of video games.
- At 17:45 Yuki can be seen with glasses, and Kyon can be seen on his knees in a mysterious room with an unknown girl in the front. This is a reference to Episode 10 ("The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi IV"). The background music also coincides with the fight scene.
- The background music that plays when Kyon takes over as pitcher is a rearrangement of the opening theme to the Touch TV series, a famous baseball anime/manga created by Adachi Mitsuru.
- Koizumi states, "It would appear that it is a bad idea to allow Suzumiya-san to be bored. We should take that into consideration during future endeavors." One such future endeavor is the plot of "Remote Island Syndrome (Part I)."
- The ambience music used during Koizumi's explanation is one parodying Ergo Proxy's.
- According to the novels, the book Yuki reads in this episode is the Japanese novel Oedipus Shoukougun by Kiyoshi Kasai.
- At the end of episode Haruhi show one of poster to join american football according to anime Eyeshield 21 that Haruhi's seiyuu (Hirano Aya) voice in Anezaki Mamori
- This is episode 3, chronologically.
- Kyon's cell phone is a Panasonic FOMA 902i Rubber Black.
- In the ending credits the names of Kyon and Haruhi are written together with huge font, seperate from the other characters. This is most likely a humorous reference to Haruhi's displeasure earlier in the episode when Kyon repeatedly draws a marked toothpick and they end up in seperate groups. The credits essentially parody the episode's events (splitting the characters into two groups), appearing as if Kyon and Haruhi had drawn marked toothpicks.
- At the end of the preview for Episode 6, Kyon shouts "Wh-What was that!? (Na, Nandattee?!)". This is a reference to the manga MMR Magazine Mystery Reportage.
- Nagato is reading the Japanese translation of Phänomenologie des Geistes (The Phenomenology of Spirit) by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, published in 1807. The latest edition of Hasegawa Hiroshi's Japanese translation was published 1998 by Sakuhinsha (ISBN 4-87893-294-5). Kyon is seen reading volume 2, I-My-Me of Let's Leave the School (学校を出よう Gakkō wo Deyō), another light novel series by Nagaru Tanigawa.
- In this episode, Haruhi and company are eating lunch at WcDonald's. Needless to say, it's parody of McDonald's.
- In the 2nd episode of the 2006 version of Kanon, Kaori Misaka finds male protagonist Yuichi Aizawa (played by Tomokazu Sugita, who voices Kyon) lost in the school hallways and says that he was acting suspiciously and that she was wondering if he was a spy of some agency who snuck in the school, which Yuichi retorts with saying that he's an ordinary transfer student. This is a reference to Itsuki Koizumi, who is the mysterious tranfer student and part of the secret agency he's in.
- Also, right before the above scene, Yuichi Aizawa seems to narrate that he "turns around and finds Kaori Misaka standing behind him", only revealed to be dialogue when Kaori responds. This is a reference to Kyon's narrating.
- The camera that Haruhi uses for taking Mikuru's maid costume photo is CASIO EXILIM EX-Z57(or EX-Z55). Mikuru uses this in Episode 6 ("Remote Island Syndrome (Part I)").
- In an Othello game, Mikuru was losing the game playing with Nagato. However, that was Nagato's first Othello play.
- Also notice that everybody parked their bikes in a "No Parking" zone. However Kyon was the only one to have his bike confiscated. This could be due to the fact that Haruhi wanted Kyon's bike to be confiscated in retaliation to him spending time with Mikuru and Nagato.
- The surreal beginning sequences seem to be homages to particular scenes throughout Neon Genesis Evangelion, particularly the cuts to black frame quotes, along with reversed and repeated images of Yuki and Kyon.
- In the DVD featuring this episode, there is an extra scene that furthers Itsuki's introduction to the club.
- This is episode 9, chronologically.
- Kyon names two islands; Panorama Island is a reference to Edogawa Ranpo's mystery novel, and Infant Island is the birthplace of Mothra.
- Haruhi names three buildings: Black Death, Lilas, and Kouketsu. Those are references to Japanese new-wave (shin-honkaku) mystery novels.
- In this episode (as well as in the flashback in "Remote Island Syndrome (Part II)") Yuki is reading the Japanese translation of the detective story The Woman in the Wardrobe by Peter Antony (pen name of the brothers Peter and Anthony Shaffer), published 1951 by Evans. The Japanese translation was published 1996 by Tōkyō Sōgensha (ISBN 4-488-29901-6). The book contains spoilers for Episode 8 (Remote Island Syndrome (Part II)).
- Koizumi says early on that the trip to the island with Arakawa is an hour long trip. Arakawa himself later says the trip is a half-hour. In the novels, Koizumi says a half-hour. This could be an oversight of the animators, or simply a translation error. It doesn't seem to indicate anything significant.
- At the beginning of the episode Remote Island Syndrome I, the camera focuses on a mysterious woman with a large white hat ripping sheets of paper and picking off pedals off a flower. As Haruhi and company gets off the ship, the woman with the white hat and dress reappears in front of them, with her head down and the hat covering her face. It is noticeable that her face is never revealed. This could have a possible meaning to it.
- In Remote Island Syndrome II, Kyon is bothered that if Haruhi really wished for a REAL killer, and is still on the island, because as Kyon and Haruhi were looking for the murderer during the storm scene, Haruhi states that she had seen someone in the cave.
- At 16:27 Kyon can be seen being surprised by a snake. This is a reference to the short story which the episode is based on, where Kyon often says and thinks that the field trip is much better then going searching for UMAs, specifically the Tsuchinoko.
- In the Baba-Nuki (Japanese version of Old Maid) playing scene, the six of spades is drawn inaccurately.
- Kyon loses the game of Old Maid that's played whilst on the ship. In the original short story "Remote Island Syndrome" it is Koizumi Itsuki that loses. Furthermore, Itsuki is known to almost always lose against Kyon in the novels, though this is never played upon in the anime, however later on in the game room, the ping pong tournament poster drawn up by Haruhi (made obvious by the fact that Suzumiya Haruhi is referred to as "Atashi" which is a Japanese pronoun for "me" used by females) shows that Kyon won against Itsuki but is defeated by Haruhi in the final game.
- In the novel, Kyon's sister didn't join the trip. Also Haruhi, Kyon, Mikuru, and Nagato drink wine during the first and second evening meals. Due to their hangovers on the third day Haruhi, Kyon, and Mikuru vow never to drink again (Nagato is immune to the effects of alcohol).
- This is the first episode in which Nagato Yuki is seen wearing something other than school uniform, both in boadcast and dvd order (discluding the witch costume she had on in episode 00 during filming) and chronologically. In fact Nagato wears a number of new outfits including a light summer outfit, one peice bathing suit, pajamas, and various other casual clothing.
- This is episode 8, chronologically.
- Kyon's initial narration is "After spending Tanabata in a state of melancholy...", and at 5:27 Kyon says "She's (Haruhi) not going to start talking about what happened on Tanabata three years ago, right?" Those are references to the chapter "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" in the novel The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi, which is the previous chapter to "Mystérique Sign." The bamboo leaf itself is also seen in the corner of the room.
- Kyon uses the rhythm of haiku when he says "Annoying Oh so annoying Annoying."
- When Kimidori tells Haruhi that the Computer Society President's parents were abroad, Haruhi suggests Canada as a possible location. The reasons for this random suggestion are revealed in episode ten.
- Kyon says, "You sure use that story a lot," at the president's apartment. This is a reference to episode 13 The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi V.
- In this episode, the computer club president's room has posters of Aya Hirano, Minori Chihara, and Yuko Goto - the voice actors of the female leads.
- In this episode Haruhi is depicted in a newspaper article carrying away the mini-tower from the Computer Society's President, where in actual fact it was Kyon who carried the mini-tower away. This might be a reference to the novel where Haruhi is the one who carries the computer.
- In the previous article in the newspaper the Computer Society's President is touching the left breast, not the right one on Mikuru, and Haruhi stands behind and not besides. This is an indication that it's Kyon's memory we're seeing.
- A copy of "Disappearance Diary" by Hideo Azuma (ISBN 4872575334) is found on the President's bookshelf.
- A copy of Dentaku Otoko (parody of Densha Otoko) is also found on his bookshelf.
- "The visualization of an object of fear" is a reference to The Monster from the Id from Forbidden Planet.
- Koizumi states that his strength is one tenth of what it is in closed space. His full strength is seen in episode 13 The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi V.
- Itsuki's attacks, "Fumoffu" and "Second Raid", are the titles of Full Metal Panic! side-story and sequel - Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu and Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid - they are also animated by Kyoto Animation. Also, when the giant bug attacks Yuki, she protects herself with a defensive barrier identical to the one generated by the "Lambda Driver" from Full Metal Panic!.
Comparison between
Haruhi Suzumiya and
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
- When the Cammel Cricket is healed during the battle, it follows Mushiking HP-recovery sequence.
- At the end of this episode, the preview for Episode 8 mimics the episode titles from the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. See comparison at right.
- There is a possible plot hole concerning Nagato's PC skill (see Episode 11 The Day of Sagittarius). Unless you consider that Nagato's skills in that episode relied more on data-manipulation than physically-manipulating PCs.
- Mikuru's line "Carrying a weapon is prohibited." is a rhetoric that can only tell that she is nothing more than ordinary citizen. (Note that carrying a weapon is prohibited even today.)
- Evidently, the whole incident of Mystérique Sign was planned by Nagato (except for the revival of subspecies of data life form). Below are the hints.
- When Haruhi yells "Maybe someone is committing cyber-terrorism against the SOS Brigade! Who is it?", the camera zooms into the suspect.
- Mikuru looks strangely tense when she introduces Kimidori after meeting Nagato's gaze. Maybe Nagato involved Mikuru in the plot.
- When Kimidori says "I'm so worried...", she reads in a monotone voice.
- Nagato fixates her eyes on Kimidori while she is talking.
- Koizumi glances at Nagato when he says "Perhaps it was judged that this much would suffice?" in the alternative space. This shows he thinks Nagato is taking control of the situation.
- The computer society president didn't know Kimidori. Possibly Nagato conspired with Kimidori, as Kyon suspected.
- The article from Megami Magazine August 2006 edition revealed that Kimidori is another humanoid interface. (In the chapter "Editor in Chief★Straight Ahead!" of Volume 8 "The Indignation of Suzumiya Haruhi", Koizumi mentioned that "Kimidori Emiri-san is one of Nagato-san's colleagues")
- Kyon strings together five negatives.
- The Computer Club's President's name is hidden throughout the series. However, when Kimidori says his name, she says "Ya--" (cat meows). (some had mistaken the next word desu, which is actually Japanese for to be as the last part of his name).
- In the episode "The Day of Sagittarius" Nagato goes from hardly knowing how to use a computer quickly into mastery. However, in this episode, which is chronologically before that one, she already has sufficient skills to alter the SOS Brigade homepage.
- During Kimidori's explanation of her "case" and a little bit after that scene, the sound effect of cicadas crying is used. This sound effect is also used the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
- Also during this scene, after Haruhi asks about who Kimidori's boyfriend is, she says "He sounded like he got along really well with the SOS Brigade." But for some reason, this line is completely omitted from the script in the english adaption.
- In the last scene, Nagato reads "Hadae no Shita", a science fiction by Chohei Kambayasi (Hayakawa Publishing, 2004 ISBN 978-4152085610). The novel's theme is humanoids acquiring personality, and it appears to answer Kyon's question raised to her. Refer http://sto-2.que.jp/ndiary/2006/05/200605151.html for identification of the book.
- This is episode 10, chronologically.
- In the sequence where Haruhi is explaining the truth behind the events at the villa, her, Itsuki's and Mikuru's poses are imitations of those used by Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth and Maya Fey respectively in the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game for the Nintendo DS (the series is known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban).
- At the beginning of the same sequence, Haruhi uses the trademark arrogant laugh of Naga the Serpant from the Slayers anime.
- The original air date of this episode, May 22, also coincides with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday.
- The "unknown" perpetrator of the crime was shown on screen as a black figure so that his identity is hidden. This follows the style of Detective Conan and Tantei Gakuen Q. Furthermore, when Haruhi strikes her final pose at the end of her Phoenix-Wright-style deduction, the last few notes of the music are reminiscent of the Detective Conan main theme (However, some fans argue it's a take on the "Cornered" music of the Phoenix Wright games).
- The episode has the camera focus on Kyon's eyes during the more particularly dark scenes. This is a reference to the anime version of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, where the camera tends to focus on Maebara Keiichi's eyes whenever he experiences a particularly traumatic event.
- As of the beginning of the episode one person is dead and another has disappeared. This is the format of Oyashiro-sama's curse in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
- Near the end of the episode, Keiichi is seen waving the knife while it is stuck in the notebook. Since his pocket is undamaged except for the hole, this is only possible if he pulled the knife out, then took out the notebook, then stuck the knife back in.
- This is the only episode in the series where Kyon is witness to a conversation between Nagato Yuki and Suzumiya Haruhi. Even then, it is merely Yuki making one simple, undirected statement with a door between them. There are only two other times when it is implied they have exchanged words, when Haruhi commandeers the Literary room and when she asks Yuki to play guitar (though even in the latter case, Haruhi does not imply that Yuki responded to her). Yuki has still spoken in Haruhi's presence (orating her lines during the making of the movie and saying 'I love you' during the game session in Remote Island Syndrome (part one)) though in both occasions she was passively obeying Haruhi's orders (speculatively, in order to remain a neutral observer).
- Though Yuki and Kyon's relationship is not explained much during the series, it is quite interesting that, when asked to open the door, Yuki opens it for Kyon, not Haruhi. This may be because she was given a new set of orders, or because her bond with Kyon is deeper than her bond with Haruhi.
- Near the end of the episode, Suzumiya Haruhi refers to Kyon as 'Watson-kun'. This is a clear reference to Dr. John Watson, from the Arthur Conan Doyle series of Sherlock Holmes books. There are in fact many similarities between Kyon and Dr. Watson, mainly their observational perspective towards their eccentric accomplices. In both series each plays the part of the main narrator and we see the stories unfold mainly from their perspective, rarely seeing it directly from that of the other main characters (Suzumiya Haruhi and Sherlock Holmes).
- In traditional English, names are spoken by the first name followed by the Surename/Family name, while in Japan they are spoken with the Family name followed by the first name. In English, Sherlock Holmes has Haruhi's japanese intitials, 'S.H'. Could it be that Kyon's real name is the same with John Watson (J.W)?
- The relationships between Kyon and Suzumiya and that of Sherlock Holmes and Watson can also be seen as similar. In both cases, the duos are originally pushed together by forces beyond their control (Watson needed a roommate in Holmes, and Suzumiya and Kyon were sat together in class), and it is the curiousities of the narrator characters that causes their bonds to grow stronger. More interestingly, the bonds on the side of Holmes and Suzumiya mirror each other, as they involve their accomplices in their activities despite having no obvious need to (indeed, both appear to see it as troublesome to have their partner come along, although both always seem to insist it is necessary). As it were, both Holmes and Suzumiya need an audience for their performances who agrees with them, and this is filled by the narrator characters (who, in turn, take the place of the reader).
- Near the beginning of the episode, where Haruhi and Kyon are talking outside their rooms by themselves, we see Haruhi's legs as she paces. She pauses and turns to Kyon but her legs turn individually, her right leg becoming her left and her left becoming her right. This was fixed in the DVD version.
- In the novel, Haruhi never gave her deduction like in the anime. In fact, Kyon's sister wasn't there to distract the butler and it was Kyon who told Koizumi that the murder was a fake. Koizumi gave up the charde after that.
- At the very end, Koizumi seems to be watching a large mole on Kyon's neck with a significant look. No explanation is ever given, and this scene does not occur in the novels (indeed it could not, since Kyon seems unaware of what Koizumi is looking at, and the narration in the novel is from Kyon's point of view). It is possible this is foreshadowing with the approval of the author, but it would have to foreshadow a novel or anime not yet published.
- This is episode 14, chronologically.
- This episode is the original story that was written for the anime series by Nagaru Tanigawa himself.
- The title "Someday in the Rain" is the opposite phrase of "On one sunshiny day" (アル晴レタ日ノ事, Aru hareta hi no koto?) which is a line from the lyrics of the ending theme Sunny Sunny Fun (ハレ晴レユカイ, Hare Hare Yukai?).
- Haruhi's cellphone is Sony Ericsson premini–II Silver with NekoMan cell phone strap.
- The background voices during the "mystery show" scene is a parody of Detective Conan.
- The collectible card game that Kyon and Itsuki play in this episode is Dragon All Stars (ドラゴン☆オールスターズ).
- At 10:30, when forcing Mikuru out of the frog costume, Haruhi quotes a verse from the ending theme Hare Hare Yukai ("Boooon! WAPU de RUPU na kono omoi wa", dubbed "Booon! Those looping feelings...")."Looping" is refered to unanimated story "endless eight" which she acquired the frog costume and it is about "looping" of time.
- At 12:53, the overheard line is from Air by Kunisaki Yukito. This is likely a nod to the fact that Daisuke Ono, who played Itsuki, was the voice of Yukito in that production.
- From 13:02 to 13:15, the phrases overheard are puns on various Ace Magazine names.
- From 13:16 to 13:23, the lines being spoken are taken from the drama Trick[1].
- A female member of the comedy group named Ice Candies that is performing during Nagato's reading is called Yuki. She is Matsuoka Yuki who is voicing Tsuruya.
- Kyon complains about the lack of appreciation from Haruhi. Actually she mumbled her thanks in the preview for this episode at the end of episode 8 Remote Island Syndrome (Part II).
- The last shot of Haruhi, before the credit titles, is the same as the cover from the 6th novel in the Suzumiya Haruhi series, The Agitation of Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒの動揺, Suzumiya Haruhi no dōyō?), but in mirror. [2] The novel in the series is a collection of short stories.
- This is the only episode that Nagato and her seiyuu Minori Chihara aren't credited in the ending credits. Despite her screen time, Nagato doesn't have any lines at all.
- In the previous episode, it is revealed to the audience in the preview that this would be was episode fourteen in the actual running order of the show. As the 'last episode' of the series, it appears to have been made specifically long winded and uneventful, to the point where it can be considered boring to watch (though not non-entertaining). The episode contains repetitive scenes, such as Haruhi constantly changing Mikuru into different cosplay costumes, and long running, completely meaningless scenes, mainly depicting the character Nagato Yuki reading a book while a radio show played in the background for more than several minutes at a time. The intentions of this appear to be to provide a contrast from the usual dramatic ending that an anime would have or the purpose may be to encourage those to watch episodes by air-date rather then chronologically.
- The main theme of this episode is "The SOS Brigade without Kyon". Though the series has always been done from Kyon's perspective, this episode is an exception and includes many scenes without Kyon present, during which fixed cameras are used without anyone providing narration.
- The sub theme is "Nagato's emotional cues". Nagato's actions are always subtle, and this episode shows the slight variance in her responses to different people. For example, in 16:00, Nagato indicated to Tsuruya where Mikuru was, but in 17:45, Nagato did not tell Kyon where Haruhi was.
- Kyon awakens with two cardigans placed on his back. One of them is definitely Haruhi's. The other either belongs to Nagato or Asahina. Given that all of other high school women that appear in the episode have given him a piece of clothing to wear, it is probably Nagato who first put her cardigan on Kyon after he fell asleep.
- When Kyon awakens, he asks Haruhi if she drew anything on his face. This is a reference to the fourth light novel, when Haruhi asks Kyon the same question when she wakes up after taking care of Kyon in the hospital, near the end of The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya, which is soon to be adapted as a movie.
- In 15:30, Kyon mumbles "the weather forecast said that there was a ten percent chance of rain", but it rains regardless. Rain might be Haruhi's wish to walk with Kyon under one umbrella.
- This is episode 4, chronologically.
- The "Ultra" of "Ultra director Haruhi Suzumiya" in the opening credit is written with small font.
- At this episode (at 2:41), you can see the ET NekoMan at background of sponsorship. On the Nekoman's forehead, 'ET' is written, but blurred.
- During the battle, Ryōko asks Yuki, "You love Kyon-kun, don't you? I know you have realized it," in sped up and reversed "incantation" Japanese. What Ryōko says.
- In the series, Yuki was moving soundlessly, stepping without any squeak. In 11:19, Yuki made her first soundful step, during the battle.
- During the preview, Haruhi and Kyon shout "Suzumiya Haruhi, Ready GO!" This is reference to the anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
- Also in the preview, when Kyon interrupts Haruhi giving the chronological number of the next episode to give the number of it in airing order, he does so by saying "Igiari" (Objection). This is likely a reference to the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS (known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban), similar to the references made in episode 8.
- The opening theme isn't aired in this episode. The full credits are instead shown in the preface before the cut theme song.
- A possible oversight in the animation, when Kyon returns the computer monitor to Haruhi's desk (about 04:15), Haruhi seems to pass through the unseen monitor cables.
- A couple from 1:13 seems to break up in 15:41
- This is actually episode 13, chronologically.
- The game which can be seen after opening is NOT igo but gomoku narabe.
- The script of this episode was done by the novelist Shouji Gatou, author of the Full Metal Panic! series.
- Yuki's alternative program code for the computer game is written in C. And compiled with the Borland C compiler for 32-bit systems. She ends the last file with ^C (control character for abort) instead of ^Z (control character for end of file), which implies that she changed her mind on alternating the current section of code in the game. The source code shown in this scene can be seen here. This program can actually intervene in running processes if it's completed.
- A possible plot hole is brought up in this episode with Nagato's computer skills. At the beginning of the episode, it is implied that she has little skill in using a computer (she's trying to use the mouse by waving it in the air). However, during the events of "Mysterique Sign", she is shown able to use a computer without trouble. Though her difficulties are not mentioned in the original novel, this apparent ignorance may actually be a result of events in episode fourteen, where Kyon tries to keep the mouse away from Mikuru by holding it in the air away from her. Nagato is shown watching this and though she has probably seen the mouse being used many times, it is also possible that this was another one of her attempts at a joke, similar to the events of "Remote Island Syndrome".
- During the episode, Haruhi calls out, "Send out the Gundam!" with the word "Gundam" censored out. The video showing the Gundam (from Mobile Suit Gundam, though the depicted scene appears to be redrawn) has also been blurred. Those Gundam references are favorites of Shouji Gatou. Additionally, when the Computer Society's defeat and in-game destruction is imminent, the president cries "Honor to the Computer Society!" while his boss ship is destroyed as reference to a high-ranking Zeon commander's defeat in the original Gundam series. Also, Daisuke Ono, Koizumi's seiyuu, voiced the main character Sven Cal Bayan of the recent Gundam OVA Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E.73 Stargazer.
- The various displays the pop up in mid-air in front of the characters are almost certainly a reference to those in Nadesico.
- In the introduction to the episode 12, a reference is made to the anime series Macross 7. Haruhi says "Listen to my song!", followed by Kyon replying "Bomber!", a direct reference to the character Nekki Basara.
- The music in the prelude scene is Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé, Suite no. 2. 1. Lever du jour (Daybreak).
- The music in the battle scene (in both the computer game and the chiptune style music playing in the room) is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad" I–Allegretto (Invasion), performed by Mariinsky (Kirov) Theater Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, a live performance in September of 2001 in Rotterdam.
- The music for the final battle scene is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4, Movement No. 4 (Finale) Allegro con fuoco, performed by Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Evgeny Mravinsky, recorded in the autumn of 1960 while they were on tour in London.
- The character on the Day of Sagittarius III game cover is a young Captain Okita of the Yamato from Space Battleship Yamato, or Starblazers. The computer club president's alter-ego's blue skin is also a reference to the main enemy of Yamato, Lord Desler. Nagato's final attack scene is also a reference to the ultra powerful canon mounted by the Space Battleship Yamato.
- Nagato's typing skill progresses day by day during drill days.
- Day of Sagittarius may be a reference to the 4x space game Master of Orion.
- Other notable items and references in episode 11:
- (Factual error) Nagato is reading a hardcover book which looks like the North American edition of Starplex by Robert J. Sawyer. However the true North American edition is paperback.
Comparison between
Suzumiya Haruhi and
Linda, Linda, Linda
- This episode is the only episode that's chronologically in place in the series.
- The title of this episode may be a tribute to the Squaresoft game Live A Live.
- It is claimed that the Intrumental Band was playing a song from Live a Live
- The title may also be a tribute to the Genesis Climber Mospeada special set after the series, called "Love, Live, Alive!". The special mainly centers on a concert performed by one of the main characters, Yellow Belmont.
- A guy from the Computer Society is in the audience when showing "Mikuru Asahina's Adventure, Episode 00".
- In the previous episode, the Computer Research President asks Kyon if he had seen the Day of Sagittarius III display they had at the Culture Festival. At 2:28, Kyon walks past the booth.
- Two Japanese TV personalities show up at 2:29, One is Hard Gay the other is Akihiro Miwa.
- The Third Reich Coffee House (純喫茶 第三帝国, Junkissa Daisanteikoku?) nameboard seen in corridor is a reference to Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer.
- The play Koizumi is acting in is Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. The parallels between the two series are subtle, but deep. For example, the main characters of both series are frequently bewildered by the events transpiring around them. Also, the scene Koizumi acts out (the debate on probability) casts a hint to the nature of the world of Suzumiya Haruhi - specifically, there is a higher power acting on the world and affecting the outcome of chance.
- The conductor of wind orchestra is a look-alike for Joe Hisaishi.
- The band that plays before ENOZ is a cover band of DMC from "First-ever Deathmetal Comedy Manga" Detroit Metal City by Kiminori Wakasugi. (Manga review; in Japanese)
- The band name ENOZ is a homage to the once-popular all-female band ZONE, which is ENOZ in reverse. ZONE also consisted of two guitarists, one bass & one drummer. Also, it mirrors the fact that ZONE disbanded after a majority of their members were about to graduate from High School. The original band members have names that are similar to their real life counterparts; Takako, Mai, Miyuki and Mizuki for the ENOZ, Takayo, Maiko, Miyu and Mizuho for ZONE, and are also playing their counterpart's instrument; Mai(Maiko) - bass, Mizuki(Mizuho) - drums, Miyuki(Miyu) - lead vocal.
- Kyon's last line in the episode "Aren't you just combining bands and idols?!" is another reference to the band ZONE who are in the genre bandol (band + idol).
- The ENOZ concert is a reference to the Japanese live-action movie リンダリンダリンダ (Linda Linda Linda, ?) (2005) from director Nobuhiro Yamashita. The movie's plot is very similar to ENOZ's history. At right is a pictorial comparison.
- The lyrics of the song "God Knows" could be seen as a reference to episode 14, the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI.
- Instruments used by ENOZ
- Haruhi's Mondial Classic is the guitar which became famous after being featured in J–rock movie Linda, Linda, Linda.
- In the sixth light novel, from which this episode comes from, the band, nor its members, were named. Additionally, the band had only three members; Haruhi and Yuki replace only one band member that functions as both the lead singer and guitarist.
- In the background of the happenings of the episode are hints of the events which led up to Haruhi's performance. At 03:30 you can see the tussle between the band members and Student Council plus a blurry bunny girl. At 04:25 the healthy members of the band run past with guitar cases. At 07:02 a bunnygirl and witch run past with guitar cases.
- When Kyon says to enjoy the festival "normally", this can be seen as a reference to the Hot Springs episode in Full Metal Panic?:Fumoffu.
- It rains just as Haruhi is about to begin the concert; it is possible this is a manifestation of her unconscious desire for a full house.
- All of the men waiting in-line for the Soba shop are wearing glasses. Perhaps, they are also the bespectacled men who watched the SOS Brigade's movie to see the main actress, Asahina Mikuru, who is in the Soba shop also.
- On the ring toss sign it says, "Throw a ring or throw away your life."
- A shot of the tree where Haruhi and Kyon sit after the concert looks similar to the Tree of Confession in Konami's Tokimeki Memorial series.
- At 07:44 when Kyon walks past a room with a girl sleep at a desk, this is a reference to the movie Linda, Linda, Linda when the main character Son, a Korean exchange student, falls asleep in her Korean culture-themed booth at the school festival because she's too tired from all the band rehearsals.
- The music player MD is mentioned. This is reference to the Sony format the Mini Disc Player, which is widely unknown and unused in the States. It featured a 2" wide enclosed rewritable disc capable of playing a multitude of formats. It was considered better than the current MP3 players of the time, but the low cost of flash memory soon drove the MD into extinction.
- During the beginning of the episode Remote Island I, the camera focuses on a mysterious woman with a large white hat ripping sheets of paper and picking off pedals off a flower. As Haruhi and company gets off the ship, the woman with the white hat and dress appears in front of them, with her head down and the hat covering her face. It is noticeable that her face is never revealed.
- In Remote Island II, Kyon is bothered that if Haruhi really wished for a REAL killer, because as Kyon and Haruhi were looking for the murderer during the storm scene, Haruhi states that she had seen someone in the cave.
- Actually it's still popular among people who tape live concerts.
- This is actually episode 5, chronologically.
- Ryōko Asakura lived in Room 505 in her block of flats. 505 is SOS in number form.
- The taxi driver shown in the cab looks like Arakawa from Remote Island Syndrome (episode 06), and Kyon actually wonders in the 7th light novel if this same taxi driver had indeeed been Arakawa, due to Arakawa pursuing a van in the same black taxi with Kyon and Mori in the backseat..
- The long taxi ride looks similar to the classic sci-fi movie Solaris[3], which is known for its 10 minute long taxi ride on the highway in a large futuristic Japanese city (Osaka). Similar scenes can be found in some Mamoru Oshii's movies like Patlabor the Movie 2 and Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer.
- Itsuki refers to the Anthropic Principle.
- Itsuki quotes Bertrand Russell's 5 minute hypothesis in his theory.
- The same vehicle appears to be trailing the taxi both before and after Itsuki brings Kyon to the closed space. Or it could simply be the animation company using the same (modified) footage so the road doesnt appear too empty.
- Haruhi's name is credited separately in the ending, and Mikuru isn't credited at all. This may represent Haruhi's increasing isolation from the other members of the SOS Brigade and her resentment of Mikuru's relationship with Kyon, both of which would lead to the events of the following episode, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi VI.
- All the lines in the preview for the final episode are taken from various "endings" of Japanese TV shows.
- Take a bath! Brush your teeth! (from the ending of comedy show Hachiji dayo Zen'in Shuugo!)
- We are going back to being normal girls. (the last words of the Japanese idol group Candies)
- My SOS Brigade will never die! (baseball player Nagashima Shigeo stated the Giants were forever immortal! after his last game ended that he was retiring)
- Be sure to watch next week! Rock paper scissors! (from the ending of Sazae–san)
- This is actually episode 6, chronologically and contains the last chapter and epilogue of the first book.
- Neither the usual opening credit nor the ending credit is showed in the episode. But an extended version of the opening credit theme (Bouken Desho Desho) is played instead of the usual ending theme.
- The music used in the climax is Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand" Part I, Hymnus: Veni, Creator Spiritus (Come, Creator Spirit), performed by Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, a live recording from the Salzburg Festival 1975. Evidently the storyline is synchronizing the text of the hymn. (spoiler)
- One of Kyon's lines, "Let's leave the school" pays homage to Nagaru Tanigawa's light novel, 学校を出よう!(Lets leave the School! Gakkou wo Deyou!); he is also the creator of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi light novels.
- The incident with the optical mouse in episode 11 is explained in this episode in a way in keeping with Yuki's computer prowess. Yuki observes Mikuru and Kyon tusseling with Kyon waving the mouse in the air.
- The tune Kyon's sister is humming when she borrows the scissors from Kyon's drawer is chorus from Sunny Sunny Fun (ハレ晴レユカイ Hare Hare Yukai), the ending theme of the anime.
- Kyon also says "Freud would have a field day with this!", after waking up, a reference to Sigmund Freud.
- In the background during Kyon and Koizumi's conversation in the ending, two ENOZ members are playing music.
- According to The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya episode from the original novel series that tells the sequel of this ending, Kyon's nonfictional story about aliens, time travelers, and espers was completely pushed away by Haruhi. But a half year later, she drew the plot of Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00 from it.
[edit] Opening Sequence
- Before the title, the hair length and clothes of Haruhi, who is seeing shooting the star, change. This is a reference to the events from the Tanabata 3 years before the anime starts. These events are explained in "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody".
- After the title, Haruhi has helicopter legs until episode 4, The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi. (She walks with her left foot only, which makes the legs seem to be rotating like the propeller of a helicopter.)
- There a screen that says "YUKI.N>" and some kanji-symbols which translates as "Let us go to the library again next time". This is a spoiler for episode 14 (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI).
- There is a brief shot of a hand holding the hilt of a knife. This is a spoiler for the Ryōko confrontation in episode 10 (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV).
- After the brief shot of the knife, there is a scene where a book falls to the floor. Fans speculate that Yuki drops her book in a rush to save Kyon when she detected Ryōko's data space. [Episode 10- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV]
- After the shot of the book falling to the floor, there is a scene where what appears to be snow is falling around who is presumably Yuki. This closely resembles one of the poetry-like writings of Yuki (as well as the accompanying illustration) in the unanimated episode Editor in Chief★Straight Ahead!
- The scene with Haruhi wearing gaku-ran uniform could be a reference to the DS game Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!
- The mathematical, physical and chemical formulas seen in opening animation are positronium, Lambda baryons, benzene ring, cyclohexanes, infinite number, Titius-Bode law, Planck's constant, Drake equation, time-dependent Schrödinger equation, Hubble's law, infinite product, definition of information entropy, large numbersnote, stationary Schrödinger equation, E=mc², probability axioms, definition of Laplace operator, the wave equation in one space dimension, and small numbersnote.
note: They are 103(千, sen), 104(万, man) to 1048(極, goku) (each unit being 104 times of previous) for large numbers, and 10-12(漠) to 10-21(清浄) (each unit being 1/10 times of previous) for small numbers. See Japanese Wikipedia for more details. (note: 虚空 (10-20) is listed as 空虚 in the opening)
- Near the end, you can see the planets Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Earth. Especially, Earth looks like an illustration that explains Wegener's continental drift theory.
- The scene of Haruhi and Nagato stretching in their PE uniforms near the end may be a reference to when Haruhi and Nagato combined to help win the club relay races against all the athletic clubs (by quite a distance, actually). This event is mentioned in the second volume of the novels, which has not been made into the anime.
- Near the end (2:54), Haruhi is shown standing on the rear pedestals of Kyon's bike and holding onto his shoulders. This is most likely a reference to the SOS Brigade's summer trip to the city swimming pool in the Volume 5 chapter, Endless Eight, where Haruhi rode on Kyon's bike in a similar fashion.
- The short scene of Haruhi playing the piano near the end is likely a reference to the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Drama CD "Sound Around", in which Haruhi forms a band and composes an original song using a piano.
[edit] Ending Sequence
- There is a blackboard that says "SOS Brigade Meeting, Agenda: About Tanabata!" in Japanese. This is a reference to the unanimated Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody episode that tells the story about what happened three years ago.
- The scene of Kyon, dressed in a reindeer costume while the gang is having hotpot, is taken from the beginning of unanimated Snow Mountain Syndrome story.
- The dancing moves in the ending may have been taken from Berryz Koubou's Gag100 bun Aishite Kudasai MV [4]. There are similarities at about 0:30, 1:23, 2:00, 2:03 and 2:40. However, the dances may also emulate Aya Hirano's days in the teen JPop trio SpringS, where the three singers would usually dance while singing. There are some comparable actions in the ending movie of the dorama Jouou no Kyoushitsu, too.
- It was rumored that some parts of the dancing sequences in the ending movie are animated on 30fps full animation so digital fansubs could't recapture the animation sequence faithfully. The more likely explaination is that it provided a much smoother image. Many other recent anime shows have also used variable frame rates (such as Pumpkin Scissors or The Coyote Ragtime Show) in their opening and ending sequences. The variation in frame rate has no effect on fansubbed video quality or on the ability to capture video streams.
- 13 seconds into the ending there is a shot of Asahina Mikuru tripping up in a maid costume and tipping tea on Kyon's head. This is most likely a reference to the [opening chapter] of The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi where Haruhi complains about her not playing the part of a clumsy maid properly because she needs to "accidentally trip the tea cup over once every three times!" and that she should practice by tipping the tea on Kyon.
- Kyoto Animation released a DVD special full dance version of the ending theme of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
.
- In episode 2 Yuki Nagato is seen reading The Fall of Hyperion, the second book in the science fiction tetralogy The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. Likewise, she reads The Code Book by Simon Singh in episode 3, Phenomenology of Spirit by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in episode 5, The Woman in the Wardrobe by Peter Antony in episode 6, and Starplex by Robert J. Sawyer in episode 11. These books all have a connection with the storyline of each episode.
- Yuki Nagato's "incantations" mostly consist of series of SQL statements, sped up and reversed.
- Aya Hirano, the seiyū of Haruhi Suzumiya, drew illustrations of her original character NekoMan for the background of sponsorship credits every week.
- There are two date-related lines in episode 2; "In the process, we reached the first day after Golden Week." and "So that makes today Wednesday." Considering "the first day after Golden Week" is May 6th that is Wednesday, the year of the story is estimated as 2009, thus "Three years before" is 2006. The anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya became a big boom in 2006, and we actually saw the "information flare" caused by Haruhi Suzumiya on the net (like this page or Youtube, for example).
- The series invokes the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, which, in layman's terms, suggests that a person's consciousness directly influences the behavior of subatomic particles. While normal people would have no control over this process, Haruhi somehow does. Macroscopically, this translates into her ability to influence the outcome of any non-deterministic event -- the random selection of batting order, for example.
- DVD Vol3 contains a secret /_MIKURU/ folder in the file structure, it contains the pictures Haruhi took of Mikuru.
- In the second episode of the Kanon remake, there is a reference to the episode "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I" in which Kaori Misaka (The character looks very similar to Haruhi in this scene) states to Yūichi, "That was a rather normal introduction," to which Yūichi responds, "If there are any introductions that aren't normal, I'd like to see them." making a reference to Haruhi's crazy introduction.
- The last episode of Shuffle! Memories references Haruhi's introduction when everyone is trying to catch a mystical wish-granting fish and Mayumi says "I have no interest in any ordinary fish! If there is a God's fish, then come to me! That is all."
- At the end of the last episode after the credits, the graphical drawing of Haruhi Suzumiya is in the same style as the drawing of Spike Spiegel used for the end credits of the last episode of Cowboy Bebop.
- Yuki Nagato's name is a pun on Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion. "Rei" can mean "cold" while "Yuki" can mean snow. Nagato and Ayanami were both Japanese warships that served in World War II.
- In 'Island Syndrome Part II' Haruhi imitates a scene from the video game, Phoenix Wright. She poses in Phoenix's famous 'objection' pose.
[edit] Official website related
- The official website of Haruhi Suzumiya once reflected what had happened in episode 7 of the anime. When it did, the title and the SOS Brigade logo were corrupted just like in that episode. Sometimes the logo changes to ZOZ Brigade and the title would not be corrupted, just as the website was when it was "repaired" in the end of the episode. When the page was not corrupted, the counter reads 29819, matching episode 7's counter. During the next few days some little animated Nekoman figures were shown on the page. The website is now fixed at ZOZ Brigade version permanently, and the counter started to generate randomly again.
- The official website's main page's source also has a comment tag that appears as
<!-- ・ヌ。シ・ソス、タオ。。トケフ醢ュエ・--> when decoded to SHIFT-JIS and which reads as <!-- データ修正 長門有希 --> in EUC-JP . It translates literally to "Data corrected by Yuki Nagato", reflecting Yuki's hack in the anime.
- At the date of June 12, 2006, the top Google search result for SOS-dan is the link to the secret mikuru folder in the official website. This is possibly because fans are seeking image files after seeing Kyon hid Mikuru's photos in that folder in episode 10. There is a new hidden link (which can be revealed by pressing "Ctrl+A") which leads to the secret Mikuru folder in Mikuru's profile now (There are some images not shown in the page, namely mikuru01.jpg, mikuru01.gif, IMG_2668.JPG1, and IMG_3096.JPG). The title of the page is "Mikuru Asahina's (Fascinating) Album"2.
- If you press Ctrl+A to "select all" on the SOS Brigade activity log (which is in fact a list of episodes), you can see there are 15498 episodes in total, which is a parody on Endless Eight of volume 5 of the novel series, The Rampage of Suzumiya Haruhi. You can also see the hidden words written by Yuki. The same thing also happens on some of the member pages, which also contains hidden messages from Kyon.
- If you press Ctrl+A to "select all" in Yuki's profile you can find a link that opens a window showing the letter #5 that was delivered to Yuki in chapter 6 of volume 7 of the novel series.
- Kyoto Animation's episode guide in their Haruhi anime section (not the Haruhi SOS Brigade site): Haruhi's message can be found by looking at the first character of every line and putting them together in a sentence.
- There is another page of the computer computer workshop compkenb page.
- In the first issue of unofficial SOS-Brigade mail, a new hidden page is revealed, a fictitious page made by computer club.
- At the date of December 18, 2006, the official homepage was replaced by a HTTP 404 error page. The source code contains the comment "
<!-- プログラム起動条件・鍵をそろえよ。最終期限・三日後 -->" (Criteria of activating the program: find all keys; deadline: 3 days after). These are references to the fourth novel, The Vanishing of Suzumiya Haruhi. The day which the website changed also matches the day which the world changed that mentioned in the novel.
haruhi.tv (March 11, 2009)
- Around March 11, 2009, the site's homepage reverted to its original form: the SOS logo is the original, undistorted version and DOES NOT read ZOZ. The comment in the source code "Data corrected by Yuki Nagato" is GONE. The enter and mail links direct to "#". Schedule gives you a list of air times apparently starting April 2 (April Fools-this was a rerun, I think). The links at the bottom direct you to "fanclub/" and "haruchuru/" (the former homepage with Haruhi-chan and Churuya content). The keywords in the source also acknowledge haruchuru.
1. Discovered in HTML source code.
2. In first sight the title is only "朝比奈みくる写真館" (Mikuru Asahina's Album), but if you look into the HTML source code of the page, you will find the title is "朝比奈みくる<!--悩殺-->写真館<!--ク。アワコム -->". "<!--" and "-->" means "comment" in HTML, and the text between them will not be shown in browsers. If it is "translated" into natural language, it would be "朝比奈みくる (悩殺) 写真館" (Mikuru Asahina's (Fascinating) Album). (The second comment (ク。アワコム) is ignored here.) The second comment "ク。アワコム" is in fact mis-interpreted, which is EUC-JP encoded but mis-interpreted as Shift_JIS. The orginial word is "検閲済", which means "censored". (Kyon probably wrote the title as "Mikuru Asahina's Fascinating Album" originally, but later censored by himself or someone else and wrote the comment, which is again a joke.)
Current state of the "SOS Brigade" Dan hompage" No links, except for the fan club and etc..; The Profiles of all of the characters have been removed, the main signia is SOS, and only the agenda link is still there.
-This is most likely due to season 2 airing very recently. In otherwords certain occurences have yet to taken place in the most recently aired episode of the anime.
