[edit] SOS-dan Members
- Kyon (キョン)
- The protagonist, and the only normal human in the SOS-dan. The name Kyon is a nickname; An aunt gave him his nickname, and his sister is responsible for it being used by his schoolmates. His real name remains unknown. The main reason why Haruhi got him to join the SOS-dan is probably because he reminds her of "John Smith" (which is a matter of course, since he is "John Smith"), whom she met three years ago.
- Suzumiya Haruhi (涼宮 ハルヒ)
- A first-year high school student, and the titular character of the series. Founder and chairman of the SOS-dan. She apparently did something three years ago to draw the attention of aliens and people from the future, and cause some people to gain supernatural powers. Which is good news for her, because she isn't interested in anything normal. She has the power to subconciously alter reality.
- Nagato Yuki (長門 有希)
- Originally the lone remaining member of the Literature Club, but sort of joined the SOS-Dan when Haruhi took over the club room. She spends a lot of her time reading hardcover science fiction books. Actually an artificial human (a "humanoid interface") created (by the Integrated Data Sentient Entity) and sent by aliens to observe Haruhi due to something she did three years ago.
- Asahina Mikuru (朝比奈 みくる)
- A second-year student. She was forced to join the SOS-dan by Haruhi, who believes that a mascot-like "loli character" needs to be around for anything extraordinary to happen. She came from the future to observe Haruhi due to something she did three years ago.
- Koizumi Itsuki (古泉 一樹)
- A mysterious transfer student with supernatural powers which he uses to fight "Shinjin" (神人). Sent by a secret organization (known simply as the Agency, or the Organization, 機関) of people with powers which believes that Haruhi is a god and to observe (and protect) her. Haruhi got him to join because he's a mysterious transfer student.
[edit] Other Characters
- Asahina-san (big) [朝比奈さん(大)]
- An older Asahina Mikuru, also a time traveller. Referred to as "Asahina-san (big)" [朝比奈さん(大)] by Kyon. The younger Asahina is refrred to as "Asahina-san (small)" [朝比奈さん(小)] when Asahina-san (big) is around.
- Taniguchi (谷口)
- One of Kyon and Haruhi's classmates, who by coincidence has been in the same class as Haruhi for several years. First name remains unknown.
- Kunikida (国木田)
- One of Kyon and Haruhi's classmates, and one of Kyon's friends for several years. First name remains unknown.
- Tsuruya (鶴屋)
- A second-year student. One of Asahina's friends from the current time period. First name remains unknown.
- Kyon's Sister
- Kyon's little sister. After hearing an aunt call him "Kyon", she adopted the nickname as well, and is thus responsible for him being called "Kyon" by his schoolmates, because when his friends visited the house and heard the nickname, they started using it as well. Name remains unknown.
- Asakura Ryouko (朝倉涼子)
- The representative of Kyon and Haruhi's class. Actually Yuki's backup. She tries to kill Kyon to see how Haruhi would react, and is defeated and destroyed by Yuki. Returns in the fourth novel for a period of time when all of the characters become normal people and Haruhi isn't (and never was) in Kitakou.
- Kimidori Emiri (喜緑江美里)
- A second-year student. Claimed to be the computer club chairman's girlfriend, but it turned out that he didn't know who she was. Revealed in the eighth light novel that she's an interface, similar to Nagato.
- Computer Club Chairman
- The chairman of the computer club, and a second-year student. He stays alone, as his parents are (supposedly) living in Honduras. Name remains unknown.
- Okabe (岡部)
- The form teacher of Kyon and Haruhi's class. In charge of the handball club. First name remains unknown.
- Student Council Chairman
- Chairman of the student council. Name remains unknown. Works with Koizumi's Organization, but is not an esper.
- Shamisen (シャミセン)
- A male calico cat. He was named by Haruhi, and for a time could speak due to Haruhi's powers. Now being kept by Kyon. His nickname is Shami.
- Shamisen #2 (シャミセン2号 Shamisen Ni-gou)
- Another calico cat. Unlike Shamisen, female. Her nickname is Shami Two.
- Tamaru Kei'ichi (多丸圭一)
- Supposedly a distant relative of Koizumi's. Actually a member of the Organization.
- Tamaru Yutaka (多丸祐)
- Keiichi's younger brother. A member of the Organization.
- Mori Sonou (森園生)
- A member of the Organization. Plays as a maid in Remote Island Syndrome I and II.
- Aragawa (新川)
- A member of the Organization. First name remains unknown. Plays as a butler in Remote Island Syndrome I and II.
- Yoshimura Miyoko (吉村美代子)
- A friend of Kyon's sister's. Kyon remembers going on a "date" with her in the eighth light novel.
- Nakagawa (中河)
- A friend of Kyon's from middle school. Apparently fell in love with Nagato at first sight. Kyon wonders if he's an esper.
