SOS Brigade

The SOS Brigade, also referred to as the SOS-dan (SOS団, エス・オー・エスだん, Esuōesu dan?), is the name of the club created by Suzumiya Haruhi in The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.

The club name is actually an acronym of "Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade To Greatly Enliven the World" (世界を大いに盛り上げるための涼宮ハルヒの団, Sekai wo Ooini moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no dan?). Some English-speaking fans translate it to Save the World by Overloading it with Fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade, (SOS) in order to retain the acronym. The official English dub, on the other hand, has translated it as "Spreading Excitement all Over the World with the Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade".
Originally, the club should have been an "organization" (SOSO) instead of a "brigade," but there were not enough members at its creation to be recognized as one.

The club initially begins with Haruhi, Kyon, Yuki, and Mikuru. Later on, Itsuki joins. Yuki is the only member not recruited by Haruhi, as she joins the SOS Brigade on her own terms.

- Indispensable Silent Character - Yuki (Alien Interface Data Link)
- Chore Boy - Kyon (In Charge of Dirty, Heavy Labour jobs, and Influencing/Controlling Haruhi)
While he technically has the lowest "rank", Kyon has proven in both animated and unanimated events in the series that while Mikuru, Itsuki and Yuki can manipulate certain factors surrounding Haruhi, it is ultimately he who holds sway over Haruhi herself. The mere fact that the purpose of his induction was never made clear to begin with and the fact that it is ultimately he Haruhi literally drags around, even before the Brigade's creation, are only among the most feasible hints. After all, it is he who caused the Brigade to even exist.

The SOS Brigade is looking for mysteries of the world. People who have experienced something mysterious in the past, have experienced something mysterious recently, or who plan on a mysterious experience in the near future should come to the SOS Brigade for them be solved. - The SOS Brigade once participated in a city-wide baseball tournament. With some special help, the Brigade was able to win its first-round match but willingly forfeited from the tournament shortly afterwards.
- The SOS Brigade conducted a day long city-wide search for mysterious happenings. Yuki gets a library card, but nothing mysterious is found.
- The SOS Brigade took a trip to a mansion on a remote island to investigate potential mysteries. The trip was sponsered by Itsuki's uncle who owned a mansion. A murder mystery was discovered; however, it was a set-up by Itsuki and his relatives.
- The SOS Brigade investigated the disappearance of the Computer Society President. The investigation was closed once the President returned to school.
- The SOS Brigade also participated in the Cultural Festival by making a movie, The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina, of which Haruhi plans to make a sequel to.
- The SOS Brigade plans to make a band for the next Cultural Festival, which Haruhi claims will be "a new type of band."
