Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮 ハルヒ, Suzumiya Haruhi?) is the main character in The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.

Voiced by Hirano Aya in Japanese and Wendee Lee in English, Haruhi is a girl in her first year of high school. She is characterized by her classmates as eccentric, beautiful, and explosive. She is very athletic, and her grades are described as "better than others." Her social life is non-existent, as she rejects all small talk and is viewed by others in her class as a deviant. She appears to be interested only in aliens, people with supernatural powers (espers), time travellers and Sliders (dimensional travelers). She has no apparent interest in normal humans. Regarding males, she will not turn down any dates but is prone to dumping them in as little as five minutes, citing reasons such as the dates being repetitive, and the men being stupid. She seems to regard all those of the male gender as little more than vegetables and will go so far as to undress for physical education while boys are still present in the classroom.
Haruhi is a rather humble person, never wanting to accept too much thanks from other people. As noted by Kyon, she often does things that would not warrant thanks, so she is not used to being appreciated by others.
Haruhi is regarded as the cause of an incident 3 years ago, when there was a crack in the space-time continuum that affected all life in the universe, which also gifted selected lifeforms with supernatural powers. This drew the attention of aliens and future human civilisations with advanced robotic, dimensional and time travelling technology. Haruhi may be the first technological singularity to be spontaneously born in the universe, marked by an off-the-scale data spike (the awakening) and the subsequent timequake (protecting her origin). As such, Haruhi Suzumiya, although an all-powerful post-human, could be in her "infant" stage, and thus explain her attitudes and childish tantrums.

When she had longer hair, Haruhi would change her hairstyle each day, as she thought each day gave off a different image. This was done through a system of different numbers and colors that represented the days of the week, shown in the table below. The chosen colors symbolize the first kanji used to write the days of the week in Japanese. For example, the first kanji in the Japanese word for Tuesday (火曜日, Kayōbi?) is 火, which means fire. So on Tuesdays, she would wear red ribbons to symbolize fire. She would also increase the number of tied-off points in her hair with each day, causing Kyon to wonder what her hair would look like on Sundays (as there is no school), when the number of tied-off points would be six. However, she stopped doing this and cut her hair after Kyon took notice and mentioned the subject.

[edit] SOS Brigade
Before she formed the SOS Brigade, Haruhi joined every single club in her high school to find out if they were worth her time or not. Incidentally, she ended up quiting every single one only after a couple of days because they were not interesting enough for her. However, many of the clubs wanted her to stay, especially the athletic clubs since she is a natural at sports and physical activities. She is also skilled with the electric guitar, as seen in Episode 12 when, with only a little practice, she was able to pull off an excellent performance that easily pleased the crowd.
The goals of the Brigade is to bring more excitement into the world, as suggested by the club's full name. The only known contribution the SOS Brigade has produced is a film intended for the High School cultural festival titled "Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00."
The club has five members consisting of Haruhi, Kyon, Mikuru, Yuki and Itsuki.
